Finding Harmony A family's journey across Europe and beyond
With the passing of years, Finding Harmony may prove to be the last new autobiographical account of the Austrian Anschluss to appear in print. But this work is about so much more than that. Completed by George Newman in his ninetieth year, this family memoir draws upon an astonishingly well-preserved archive of letters and documents dating back to the 1800s. Throughout, the author's love of music, both as a player and as an enthusiastic opera-goer, sings from the pages. Music symbolises a joyous life force, a force that triumphs over the darker events described.
"On Monday the 14th March 1938, my last day in Vienna, I had just settled down to a game of Monopoly with my friend Georg Pekarek in his flat above ours. It must have been about mid-morning. My mother came upstairs. Her face was white and drawn. She told me to stop playing and to come home..."
ABOUT THE AUTHOR George Newman is retired from a career in music publishing and teaching. He attended the Bundesgymnasium in Dobling, Vienna, then Magdalen College School, Oxford and read History at Oxford University. Since 1959, he has lived in Wimbledon, south west London, with his pianist wife Patricia Carroll; he has a son and two daughters and six grandchildren. George is a keen lifelong violinist, viola player and opera-goer. Previous publications include opera reviews and articles for the Wiener Kurier and Tempo Magazine (Boosey & Hawkes), amongst others.
